HAM Radio, Fox Hunting, and Space Settlement Design...Say What?! (Grades: K-12)

My Session Status

When:
11:15 AM, Wednesday 26 Jun 2024 (1 hour 20 minutes)
Where:
The Center for Space Education - Room 7030
So, what do you get when you mix HAM Radio, Fox Hunting, and Space Settlement Design…a lot of STEAM! In this session, participants will experience the integration of STEAM, as they utilize a Fox Hunt (scavenger hunt with radios) around the grounds of the Center for Space Education to render a 2D map and a 3D design for their space settlement in the classroom. This information will then be translated into designing a blueprint of a required building or room for the space settlement. Lastly, the participants will recreate a 3D model of either their 2D blueprint of a specific room, building, or overall space settlement design using LEGO and various types of materials by matching their documentation with task cards from the transmitters.

Participants will work in teams and will combine builds making one large settlement area. The activities will allow participants to experience what students experienced in the STEM Lab; learning the science by doing the science in a cross curricular experience…by integrating mathematics, art, technology, wireless and radio technology, topology, geography, and engineering. All activities will come with lessons and student data collection examples.
