As a professional scientist and science educator, I am passionate about the intersection of science and society. Science Fiction’s focus on that intersection has always drawn me to it and my love of Science Fiction has always provided much of the impetus for my own career. I am an Associate Professor Emeritus from the Department of Physics at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where I have taught since 2004. Prior to coming to SIUE, I was Director of Laser Development at the Nevada Terawatt Facility in Reno, NV. I have also worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Air Force Research Laboratory (as well as several other places). I hold a Ph.D. in Optical Sciences (specializing in laser physics and quantum optics) and an MS in Physics from the University of New Mexico, and a BS in Physics from the University of Arizona. My wife and I live in an earth-shelter house (think "hobbit hole") in rural Illinois with (at the moment) two cats, one dog, and whatever has crept in when we weren't looking.

As culture and social mores have changed, our ideas about what the future will look like also have changed. This panel would discuss how authors of different eras portrayed the future as they understood it—and all the many ways that their visions seem quaint and funny now (for instance, smoking indoors or at work; reading paper newspapers on a space station; searching for a phone booth, or others).

Synthetic biology can completely change how we live. From no longer needing animals to produce fabrics or food for us, to having plentiful supplies of medications like insulin, and new ways to produce fuels and clean our environment. What new discoveries have been recently made in this field?

While the technology developed to win the Space Race dramatically changed peoples' lives when it was adapted commercially, how much was really accomplished by the moon landings other than abandoning some really expensive machinery there? Well into the next century, we're trying to develop new technology to do it again. Realistically, can we expect anything significant from a potential moon landing?
