Set something far enough from now, and you've got a lot of leeway. It's easier to suspend disbelief when you're portraying a world very different from the readers' own. But what if you want write something closer to the present? How can you make it feel like the events you're describing naturally follow those of today? How do you decide which things will change, and by how much?
