Borrowing liberally from the real world is accepted practice for designing settings and worldbuilding, but the importance of creativity can't be denied.  What steps does an author need to take to insure that settings, characters or other writing elements derived from elsewhere are still distinct?  How should an author self-critique to find and eliminate elements that slavishly and unoriginally copy from elsewhere?
