A minor character in the Welsh Mabinogi has become one of the largest heroes in folklore and mythology. From Mark Twain to Richard Wagner to Broadway and the silver screen, King Arthur and his retinue of knights, ladies and their legends have evolved from the original into something which would leave a 5th century Welshman barely able to recognize the character he knew. How and why has this happened?
