Dr. Donald A. Sylvan Don Sylvan was a “full time” Political Science professor at Ohio State University for three decades. During that time, he wrote many books and articles, supervised 31 completed PhD dissertations, won “best teaching” awards, and appeared regularly on such media outlets as CNN and National Public Radio. His area of concentration was Middle East Politics, especially Israeli-Palestinian Relations. In terms of “lay leadership” in the Jewish community, Sylvan held many positions, including Congregational president; Columbus Jewish Federation Vice President; and co-founder and president of Kol Ami, the Community Hebrew School of Columbus; Sylvan was chair and/or officer of a number of other Boards and served on Boards of a number of North American and global Jewish organizations. From 2005 through the end of 2012, Sylvan served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Education Service of North America (JESNA) in New York. He led this key Jewish education organization to impressive successes in the creation and inspiration of Jewish education. From the beginning of 2013 through the fall of 2015, Sylvan served as the founding Executive Director of Hillel Ontario, where he supervised campus directors and worked with lay leaders of Hillel organizations at universities throughout Ontario to enhance Jewish identity of Jewish students, and bring innovation and efficacy to Hillel organizations on those campuses. In the fall of 2015, Sylvan returned to Columbus, Ohio, where he is again teaching Middle East Politics at Ohio State, now as Emeritus Professor, and has launched a consulting practice to educate and facilitate civil conversations between Jews about Israel and other subjects.
