In recent years, we have seen a tremendous rise in the use of social media to support (and fund) various forms of activism. Once dismissed as “slacktivism,” new research suggests that the use of social tools is these ways is actually a powerful and effective way to engage in active citizenship. In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the potential uses for social media to support activist causes, as well as how we might help students to use these same tools to become active, participatory citizens who make a positive mark on their communities and the world.
