Teachers, resource developers and researchers have collaborated through the Math Minds Initiative to enhance mathematics learning at the elementary level. The initiative, now in its sixth year, combines elements of intrinsic motivation, mastery learning and the variation theory of learning. Students in the project have made steady gains in conceptual understanding, problem solving, and fluency in mathematics. In this session, we share inspiring classroom anecdotes and invite participants to engage in and reflect on tasks that highlight ways that effective variation can support both struggling learners and those who are ready for bigger challenges.
