This session is designed to fully showcase how popular music as a text can be utilized within ELA classrooms to fully engage students. Multiple examples from a wide range of contemporary musical genres will be provided to demonstrate how music and lyrical representations hook students into fulfilling discussions and interdisciplinary connections. A wide range of assignment and project options with exemplars will also be shown to suggest the many ways in which music in the ELA classroom can be successfully integrated. Whether as a single lesson, clearly defined unit of focus or perhaps even a ELA course focus of its own, popular music is a tool worth investing in for student success.
