Today’s news is frequented with items related to the current opioid crisis. While the use of many other drugs is decreasing, abuse of opioids and other prescription drugs is acknowledged as a growing concern for youth. Teachers in the classroom struggle to give the right message. The use of medicine to treat illness or disease is a necessity, making an abstinence-based approach unrealistic. Students need correct, unbiased information in order to make informed decisions and reduce risk. In this session we will examine student over-the-counter and prescription drug use, misuse and abuse. Information will include prevalence of use, drugs of abuse (including fentanyl), signs and symptoms of misuse/abuse, the link to mental health concerns, a harm-reduction approach, and available resources.
