“Number sense is not generally taught by direct instruction. It is developed through engaging in rich mathematical tasks connected to each person’s own experiences and their previous learning.”

(Alberta Education document, What Is Number Sense?)

Participants will engage in active exploration of a range of mathematical routines that promote number sense development in the classroom. This routines support students in noticing patterns, making connections between different representations and exploring properties of numbers and operations.

• Number Talks with visual prompts

• Visual Patterns

• Estimation

• Clothesline Math

The question of assessment, the details of logistics and implementation as well as the ways to adapt these routines to the range of learning intentions will also be discussed during the session.
