From painting to dance, we know that art is a powerful way for students to learn about cultures other than their own. But how can we, as teachers, foster meaningful cross-cultural artistic engagement, especially when teaching about cultures other than our own? In this fun and interactive workshop, Jennifer and Alycia of Nightingale Dance will challenge us to explore these thorny issues through first discussion and then through movement.

In the first half, we will discuss some concrete strategies for teaching cultural art forms—while avoiding the dangers of cultural appropriation. Then, Jennifer and Alycia will put some of these strategies into practice by teaching participants the basics of the Egyptian art of raqs sharqi (also known as belly dance). All genders and abilities welcome.
