As our classroom become more diversified, we are seeing an influx of complex English language learners in mainstream classrooms. The complexities of a student with Autism Spectrum Disorder are compounded when students are challenged to enhance their communication skills when learning an additional language. While ASD characteristics are often at the forefront of guiding instruction, it is critical to keep the ELL lens in mind and look at all facets that impact communication. Connecting communication goals with language development goals aides planning and implementation of strategies that address the learner as a whole. This session will focus on how ELL instructional strategies can support both English language development and communication skills for an ASD/ELL learner.
