Are you a middle school teacher looking for easy but powerful ways to support classroom diversity, while simultaneously achieving the learning outcomes? This session will explore how the Principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guide teachers in creating a learning environment focused on student strengths and the learning process. Participants will examine how the 3 Principles of UDL guide educators in designing instruction that all students can participate in and enjoy from the onset. Rather than planning accommodations and modifications once a ‘plan for most’ is completed, UDL encourages teachers start their planning process with the needs of all students in mind - like building a ramp all students can access, in lieu of retrofitting an existing set of stairs to provide access for some students. UDL removes learning barriers and addresses student variability, while providing options that allow students to choose how they will receive information and demonstrate understanding.
