Despite its name, ADHD should be considered a difference rather than a disorder. These differences can be problematic in certain situations, such as school. For example, students may not be able to control their attention to finish in-class work. However, when managed effectively, the symptoms associated with ADHD are assets that can help students be extremely successful in whatever they pursue. They key is managing it effectively.

The focus of this session is to help participants understand the complexities of ADHD and delineate key interventions promoting student success. Thus, an overview of ADHD is provided, including its assets and challenges. It is critical for teachers to understand the complex nature of ADHD and the associated executive functioning difficulties students have to effectively promote student success in the classroom.


The majority of the session, however, delineates practical, effective, evidence-based strategies to maximize student engagement in class and to close the gap in the executive functioning delays students with ADHD exhibit. Case examples are provided and participants will learn how they can effectively present learning material to students with ADHD and facilitate student motivation to task completion.
