Publishing in the area of sexual health, particularly within the LGBTQ2+ community, has grown exponentially in the past ten years. This presentation will showcase the various types of books available for both children and caregivers and range from non-fiction to novels to picture books. Beginning at any early age, children ask questions about their bodies, reproduction, puberty, and sexuality. These questions can sometimes be difficult for caregivers (parents, family members, teachers or child-care workers) to answer. What is developmentally appropriate? What if the caregiver doesn’t know the answers themselves? In this 60-minute presentation, participants will discover resources available through the Calgary Public Library and Alberta Health Services to help support children aged 5-17 in learning about sexual health. These resources will help caregivers to be ready to answer almost any questions and help children to discover the information they are searching for. Focus will be given to books that are inclusive to race, gender, and LGBQT2+ experiences.
