This talk presents a dynamic array of teacher images from the media landscape and shows how they envision the profession. It explains how these narratives affect the teacher identities of mid-career and pre-service teachers, as well as student expectations and levels of public support. It draws on recent research to explain what is inspiring, worrisome, funny, and professionally useful about different types of teacher characters. It suggests ways of co-opting teacher images to advocate for classrooms, gain political support, and enhance community relations.
