Raised in suburban New Jersey, Anand Gnanadesikan's love of the natural world was fueled by summers spent on Cape Cod. He received his Ph.D. in physical oceanography from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1994 and spent over 15 years associated with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, where he worked on understanding ocean circulation, biology and chemistry using climate models and observational syntheses. His research interests lie in understanding the interactions between the living world and the circulation of the oceans and atmosphere. Since 2011, he has been on the faculty in the Earth and Planetary Sciences department at the Johns Hopkins University..
