This reflects shifts towards interdisciplinarity and changes in patterns of media consumption, the growing legitimacy of popular culture in academia, changes within the structures of University departments themselves, and the strong presence (and popularity) of visual media in the high school English curriculum.

Indigenous Futurism, an offshoot of Afro-Futurism, is a political act, because Indigenous writers and artists imagine a tomorrow in which they still exist. Māori, like many Indigenous civilisations, have very different ways of thinking about time and space from those prevailing in the West. This presentation examines these ideas on Indigenous Futurism from a local perspective.
