What's really part of the story? If something is popular, it grows into new forms, created by new people. A toy can become a movie franchise, a TV show can spawn hundreds of novels, manga can lead to anime can become a game can be a movie that has a graphic novel .... Is the tie-in really part of the story? Is expanding the universe making it better, or do you only count the original story from the original creator as actually canon?
