Dr. David Maberley, MD

Dr. Maberley performs research in population health and the medical and surgical management of macular disease, diabetic retinopathy, and high myopia. He current research activity includes co-leading the Retinopathy Group for Diabetes Action Canada, collaborating in the development of the Preceyes Robotic Vitreo-retinal Surgical System, and in modelling blood flow through retinal microvascular pathologies.

Dr. Maberley has served as a board member for the National Aboriginal Diabetes Association and the Canadian Ophthalmology Society. He has been Retina Section editor for the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology and protocol reviewer for the US National Institute of Heath’s Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Trials Network. He led the formation of the Canadian Retina Society, which has since become the primary administrative and educational body for Canadian retina specialists. For 12 years he served as research director for the BC Provincial Health Services Authority’s Retinal Diseases Treatment Program. 

Dr. Maberley was Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at UBC, Head of Vancouver Acute Ophthalmology, and Regional Head of Ophthalmology for the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority from 2012 through 2021 and currently is the Head of Ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital.
