Stephen Maing is a Brooklyn-based documentary filmmaker and visual journalist. His feature documentary, High Tech, Low Life, made over five years, documents two of China's first dissident citizen-journalists as they report on censored news throughout mainland China. The film was broadcast nationally on the award-winning PBS series P.O.V. and received Best Documentary awards at festivals in Boston, Little Rock, Woods Hole, London and Seoul.He has directed various films for the New York Times, PBS, Time Magazine, The Intercept, CNN and The Nation, including the half-hour documentary Hers to Lose - one of the first long-form projects produced at the Times. Stephen has co-directed an on-going series of films about police-community relations and the criminal justice system. He is a fellow of the Sundance Institute's Documentary Film Program, a grant recipient of the MacArthur Foundation, ITVS and a 2016 John Jay/Harry Frank Guggenheim Reporting Fellow.
