Originally from the Philippines, filmmaker Marty Syjuco moved to NYC in 2000 and worked in film distribution at Focus Features.  In 2004 he decided to pursue his passion: documentary filmmaking.  His first feature film, Give Up Tomorrow, seven years in the making, was an ITVS co-production and commissioned by Nick Fraser for BBC's Storyville.  The film played theatrically and has reached millions of viewers thru broadcasts around the globe, including PBS, as part of POV's 25th anniversary season. Give Up Tomorrow  was nominated for an Emmy® Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism and was selected for Britdoc's Impact Award.

Marty’s second feature, Almost Sunrise, a co-production with ITVS and POV, premiered at Telluride Mountainfilm in 2016 and had 500+ screenings across North America, winning audience awards, jury prizes, and impact awards.  The film opened theatrically at the IFC Center in NYC in July 2017, followed by a PBS national broadcast in November (Veterans Day) on POV.  Recent honors include a CINE Golden Eagle Award an Emmy® Award nomination for Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary.

Marty is also a Producer on the feature Call Her Ganda - directed by PJ Raval - which celebrated it’s world premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, followed by the international premiere at Hot Docs in Toronto, and has won a Grand Jury Award in Los Angeles and an Audience Award in Toronto.

In June 2018, Mary was invited to join the Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
