Sally Rubin is the Co-Director and Producer of hillbilly (with Ashley York), funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, and Executive Produced by David Sutherland and Doug Blush, with Lead Advisor Kirby Dick. hillbilly premiered as the Closing Night Movie at the Nashville Film Festival, played at Traverse City Film Festival, Hot Springs Film Festival, and is distributed by the Orchard. Rubin recently completed Life on the Line, funded by the Fledgling Fund, about a teenage girl growing up on the US/Mexico border, which aired nationally on PBS and premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Her previous documentary, Deep Down (co-directed by Jen Gilomen), was about two friends in eastern Kentucky who are divided over mountaintop removal coal mining near their homes. The film premiered at the Big Sky Film Festival, was nominated for an Emmy Award and was funded by ITVS, MacArthur, and Chicken and Egg Pictures. It was broadcast on PBS’ Emmy-winning series Independent Lens and has reached almost 3 million people through its broadcast, distribution, and outreach campaign. Rubin's other credits include The Last Mountain (Director, Producer, Editor), broadcast on PBS, Robert Greenwald's Iraq for Sale: the War Profiteers (Editor), the television series “The Freedom Files” (Editor), as well as David Sutherland's 6-hour Frontline special “Country Boys” (Associate Producer). Rubin is full-time documentary professor at Chapman University and a graduate of the M.A. program in Documentary Film at Stanford University.
