
Laura Nix
Laura Nix is a director, writer and producer working in non-fiction and fiction. Her short film, WALK RUN CHA-CHA, was nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for Best Documentary Short Subject, and the New York Times series, FROM HERE TO HOME, in which the film appears, was nominated for a 2020 News and Documentary Emmy. Her feature documentary INVENTING TOMORROW ((Sundance US Documentary Competition 2018, CPH:DOX 2018) won a 2019 Peabody Award. She was named a 2018 Chicken & Egg Breakthrough Filmmaker and was awarded the Sundance Institute/Discovery Impact Fellowship in 2017. Previously she directed THE YES MEN ARE REVOLTING, (Toronto International Film Festival 2014, Berlinale 2015), which was theatrically released domestically and in multiple international territories. Her film THE LIGHT IN HER EYES premiered at IDFA in 2011; was broadcast on the PBS series POV and Al Jazeera Middle East and toured the world as part of Sundance’s Film Forward program. Other feature directing credits include the comedic melodrama THE POLITICS OF FUR, which played in over 70 festivals internationally and won multiple awards including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at Outfest 2002; and WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT: THE STORY OF HEDWIG commissioned by New Line Cinema, 2002. Her nonfiction work has screened at hundreds of film festivals internationally and on television via HBO, Arte, ZDF, VPRO, CBC, NHK, Canal+, and IFC. A MacDowell, IFP and Film Independent fellow, she has also received support from the Bertha Foundation, BritDoc, Cal Humanities, COBO Fund, the Danish Film Institute, Glassbreaker Films, and the Sundance Documentary Fund. Raised in New York state and based in Los Angeles, Laura is a film expert for the U.S. State Department’s American Film Showcase and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
