Genevieve Carmel

Program Officer
LEF Foundation

I've been a part of the LEF Foundation team since 2013, where I help filmmakers to navigate the LEF New England Moving Image Fund, a regional grant program that supports non-fiction feature works by film and video artists who live and work in one of the New England states, and which values artistic vision and experimentation. As part of my work for LEF, I also co-program short films and coordinate press and outreach for The DocYard, a screening and discussion series that brings new and artistic non-fiction films to Boston.

I developed an interest in the critical social role of non-fiction film and video as an art form by way of studying social anthropology. I lived in Beijing from 2010-2013, where I worked as a film festival coordinator and film programmer, and learned about the unique challenges facing small-budget, independent filmmakers in mainland China.

Outside of my work at LEF, I also program Crows & Sparrows,
a screening series that seeks to enhance artistic exchange between media artists in North America and East / Southeast Asia, with a focus on connecting film circles in Boston and Beijing.

I'm also a member of the AgX Film Collective, an artist-run film lab in Boston with an open membership that supports and celebrates the unique artistic possibilities of photochemical filmmaking. AgX is a part of a growing network of artist-run film labs around the world.

My short film LETTER TO SUBI screened at festivals in 2015 and 2016. I'm now working on a short archival film called GRANDMA'S SOVIET PICTURE SLIDESHOW (wt), which is about a 1968 "woman-to-woman" peace-building mission between the US and the USSR, told through 35mm slides and tape recordings collected by my grandmother, who attended the meeting.
I'm also in the development stage on a personal project called SAINT SOLEIL, a feature non-fiction film about the contested histories of a Haitian artist collective co-founded by my father in 1973.
