Nina Alvarez is a journalist and documentary filmmaker.  For the past twenty-five years, she has reported breaking news and feature stories from all over the world, on broadcast and web segments, radio reports and long-form documentaries.

Nina began her journalism career at the ABC News documentary unit.  She then joined the network’s Miami Bureau and established the Mexico City Bureau, reporting and producing breaking news, feature and investigative stories in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Her work aired on World News Tonight with Peter JenningsGood Morning AmericaNightline and 20/20 and was recognized with three national Emmy Awards.   Since 2001, she has reported and produced for Univision, NBC, CNN, NPR, MTV News and Al Jazeera from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and Latin America.   

Her work has focused on the immigration experience and the rights of women and girls.  In 2001, she crossed the border herself on assignment for ABC News Nightline.  She was a producer on the Oscar-nominated film, Which Way Home (2009). She spent over a year documenting girls trying to exit situations of commercial sexual exploitation for the Showtime documentary, Very Young Girls. Nina wrote and directed an episode for the landmark PBS series, Latino Americans (2012), for which she received a Peabody Award and the Imagen Award.  Her short film, Fields of Promise (2016), was broadcast on America ReFramed (PBS World Channel) and awarded the Alfred I. duPont Columbia Journalism Award.  

Nina is currently documenting the stories of Salvadoran refugees in the US, some of whom fled the civil war over thirty years ago and are now fighting deportation. The project has received support from the Independent Television Service and Latino Public Broadcasting.

This year, Nina joined the faculty as a full-time professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.  In addition to her documentary work, Alvarez is also overseeing a multiplatform Investigative Project at Futuro Media Group.  She is a native New Yorker, the daughter of Salvadorans and the mother of a two-year old Salvadoran-French-Irish-American daughter.
