Mitch Levine

Mitch Levine is a film and stage director with credits the world over in film, theatre, opera and dance. He is a directing member the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the renowned Actors Studio, was a fellow in performance and design at the Juilliard School and was the first James Cameron Fellow in Directing at the American Film Institute. There, he directed COLETTE, based on the French writer, STALE IDENTITY, an homage to Hitchcock and film noir and SHADOWS, a multi-award winning exploration of love, family and the attraction of evil during the Holocaust. Until the pandemic, Mitch was directing the national tour of the political comedy GOD HELP US!, starring Ed Asner. He is currently collaborating with Maestro Gustavo Dudamel on DANZA PER VITA: REMEMBER THEIR LIGHT, a multi-media/multi-arts response to Covid.

Mitch’s film, IN CONFIDENCE, a drama about a woman’s unusual journey, screened at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was an Official Selection of the American Cinematheque. He co-directed the documentary HUNGRY IS THE TIGER, which utilizes traditional performance and focuses on the food crises in India and Indonesia and is currently directing MORPHING GRAVITY, a documentary chronicling the creation of an aerial ballet and our dreams of flight.

Mitch was Artistic Supervisor of the Robert Wilson/Phillip Glass opera EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, collaborated with Peter Gabriel and Moses Pendleton on PASSION, directed A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM for the Pacific Resident Theatre and Jean Anouilh’s ANTIGONE for the Williamstown Theatre Festival. In NY, he directed SORRY! at Circle Rep, AMORPHOUS GEORGE for MCC and the revival Lyle Kessler’s ORPHANS at ATA. His post-apocalyptic staging of GODSPELL won Best Production/Best Director honors in La Jolla and his production of Arthur Kopit’s WINGS was much honored in Los Angeles. Last year, Mitch wrote and directed the Bicentennial Celebration of the University of Virginia. It was a vast production – four hours, 850 performers, 23,000 in the audience – and chronicled both the history of the university and of the American nation, in all their flaws and virtues. Mitch is currently directing GOD HELP US!, a political comedy starring Ed Asner as the good Lord and is preparing productions of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s THE VISIT, starring Barbara Bain and the family drama THE VENUS EFFECT. He is in the conceptual stages of DANZA PER MORTA, an epic chronicle of the genocides and massacres of the 20th and 21st centuries set to Verdi’s REQUIEM, slated to premiere at Ground Zero in New York with a major world orchestra.

Mitch founded The Film Festival Group, a global consultancy and service provider to filmmakers and film festivals and was the founding producer and host of the American Film Institute’s Great Filmmakers series. He is a regular host of many of Hollywood's Conversations With..., has written, produced and directed tributes to many of the world's greatest cinema artists, and is a regular moderator for panels covering the entertainment business and of the Variety and Screen Actors Guild’s screening series. He regularly presents seminars and workshops for documentary and fiction filmmakers: Preparing Your Film for the Global Marketplace and Navigating the World’s Film Festivals and Film Markets.

Mitch produced and hosted the Refugee Voices in Film Conference at the Cannes Film Festival, in partnership with the festival and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. He is on the faculty of Loyola Marymount University and for many years was Production Director of MOMIX Dance Theatre. He previously served as a Special Representative to the United Nations.
