Cited as the “greatest master of the art of the documentary,” filmmaker Frederick Wiseman has produced and directed more than 40 documentaries, including his first film, the controversial and groundbreaking Titicut Follies, documenting the inmates at the Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He went on to direct other films, primarily exploring institutions, from the US welfare system to La Comédie-française, and most recently, Ex Libris - the New York Public Library. On the eve of releasing his new film, Monrovia, Indiana, Wiseman shares thoughts on his work, his process and the subjects and issues of his films.
