In today’s media, political, and civic environment, documentary filmmaking is more important than ever. Documentary filmmakers are conducting groundbreaking investigative reporting, putting themselves at risk, and becoming targets of government surveillance or even persecution. As a result, advocacy for documentary filmmakers is more important than ever. Documentarians need a voice in courts and legislatures as well as in public controversies of our time. In practice, what does such advocacy look like? What kinds of resources should be needed? What should be the priorities for advocacy? In the age of fake news, increasing authoritarianism, and media fragmentation, we will discuss how to help shape the next era of documentary advocacy.
