What is the state of professional mentorship in the doc landscape? What are the best mentorship programs doing right now to support filmmakers, and what could we be doing better? Historically, mentorship has been a commitment to creatively nurturing new or mid-career filmmakers, brokering industry connections, or strategizing distribution and audience engagement campaigns. But as we think more about the structural inequalities that have shaped our field, and who has access to programs like ours, the panel will consider whether it’s fair to offer mentorship without also providing financing. We’ll also talk about striking a balance between top-down mentorship and peer-to-peer mentorship, and how keep a film from losing all momentum once the maker has completed our program.
