Documentary films play a vital role in the public sphere where social problems are defined, negotiated and discussed by active publics. But the public sphere is transforming. Political threat and civic unrest increases, while trust in facts and information decreases. Misinformation is rampant, and so are accusations of partisan bias in all mechanisms of communication, including documentary. When it comes to mobilizing communities and sparking dialogue, how and why are documentary films crucial in this urgent juncture? This panel will consider provocative and thoughtful angles about documentary in a political and civic moment fraught with danger, threat, misinformation and polarization.
