Anam Abbas is a Pakistan based Pakistani/Canadian filmmaker. She runs Other Memory Media in Pakistan. As a producer and DP her first feature "Showgirls of Pakistan", winner of the Best Pitch Award at the 2016 Hotdocs Forum, is scheduled to release in 2020. Her latest fiction short "Saya", co-directed with Fawzia Mirza, was selected to play in competition at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2019. Anam's first feature documentary as a Director "This Stained Dawn" is currently in post production. The film follows the feminist activists who organize the Women's marches in Pakistan. Anam herself was an organizer of these (Aurat March) in Karachi in 2018 and in Islamabad in 2019.
Anam participated in Locarno Film Festival's Open Doors Hub with a fiction feature project in Aug 2017. She was also selected to participate in the 2018 Berlinale Talents program and is a 2019 Film Independant Global Media Makers , 2020 Berlinale Talents Project Market Fellow, and 2020 Cannes Producer's Network alumni. Her first fiction feature project as a Producer has been awarded the 2020 Telefilm Talents to Watch grant.
Anam is also one of the founding members of the Documentary Association of Pakistan (DAP). DAP is a recipient of the 2019 Movies That Matter grant for its national initiative the "Chalta Phirta Film Festival" which travelled across Pakistan from August 2019 to March 2020 and is now running online till November 2020. DAP has also been awarded the Mastercard/Berlinale Footprints Fellowship in 2020, which supports our frst 6 month Documentary developmnet workshop with 12 emerging filmmakers from Balochistan, Pakistan.
