SPONSORED Breakout: A Conversation with Steve James presented by National Geographic Documentary Films
Director Steve James (“America to Me,” “Hoop Dreams”) is one of the documentary world’s most celebrated and talented directors. His next project, premiering as a one-night, commercial free event on National Geographic on Oct. 29, is “City So Real,” a fascinating and complex five-part documentary series that delivers a deep, multifaceted look into the soul of a quintessentially American city, Chicago. Set against the backdrop of its history-making 2019 mayoral election and the tumultuous 2020 summer of COVID-19 and social upheaval following the police killing of George Floyd, “City So Real” is a gritty and loving depiction of a city that is at once fiercely unique and a microcosm of the nation ⎯ and our world ⎯ as a whole.
In a conversation moderated by IDA Board President Brenda Robinson, James and his longtime collaborator and cinematographer Kevin Shaw will discuss this exciting new project, as well as look back at how their journey as filmmakers continues to evolve their storytelling perspectives. “City So Real” is a Participant and Kartemquin Films production for National Geographic.
