What is it about weird literature that is so unsettling? For something that shares tropes with horror, SF, fantasy etc, how does it make such a distinct space for itself: Area X, The Zone, even good old Arkham? Can you separate it from place, would it just not work as well in space? Does the weird depend on our ignorance? Does the setting have to be about the familiar so we can destabilise it? Is it a way for more literary writing to enter genre fiction?
