A parasocial relationship is the perception or feeling of having a relationship with a character or real-life personality a person has never met. At it's simplest it can create a joyous excitement and feeling of being involved with a person's life and following their activities on social media, or watching a TV show, reading fanfiction and buying merchandise. It can help people who are socially isolated, but also enhance social isolation. It can encourage expectations for a real life person to behave a certain way and lead to unsavory actions when expectations aren't met. We explore the joys and difficulties - and stigma - associated with parasocial relationships.
