Dr Helen Pennington is a postdoctoral researcher studying epidemic diseases of plants at The Sainsbury Laboratory working with pathogens including potato blight (which caused the Irish potato famine) and rice/wheat blast (one of the main diseases of cereal crops). 

Dr Colin Gavaghan is the NZLF Chair in Law & Emerging Technologies, at the University of Otago, in New Zealand specialising in new technologies and law, society and ethics.

In this discussion they explore different aspects of biotechnology, what is being done, what can be done, what might be done in the future and the legal and ethical implications thereof.
