From Elon Musk to the EU Parliament, the idea that "smart robots" and artificial intelligence threaten a major disruption to human employment is of current concern. Are the risks overrated? Humanity has undergone radical disruption through automation before. Are we are finally running out of things that humans can do better or cheaper, than robots? What might a post-work society look like? Does the robotic future offer leisure and plenty? Or vast swathes of humanity confined to permanent redundancy or precarity? SF offers a wide range of visions about these matters; how do genre authors really see things developing?
