Karen is Professor of the Practice of Spatial Sciences and she teaches full-time in the online Masters of Science in Geographic Information Science and Technology program at the University of Southern California. While she is known internationally for her leadership in several early GIScience education projects, currently her core responsibilities are teaching courses in Spatial Analysis and Spatial Modeling, and advising Masters thesis students. Fortunately, since her courses are online and her students are "at a distance", she does not need to spend much time on campus in LA; instead she teaches from the lanai (porch) of her one-room cottage on a Kona coffee farm on the Island of Hawaii.
