I am chair of GIScience 2016. In my day job, my research focuses on the intersection of social theory and software architecture as it pertains to geospatial technologies. I'm primarily interested in how non-experts can use even the most sophisticated information and communications technologies, which has led to my on-going collaborations with NASA on how the public can run their own climate models and collaborations with indigenous peoples on how to best deploy geospatial ontologies. I'm currently the principle researcher of a multi-million dollar grant investigating how city-citizen interactions are shifting as a result of mapping technologies, open government data, civic technology, citizen science and crowdsourcing.
