This short paper outlines the application of the event calculus formalism to the problem of land use and land cover classification of big Earth observation data. Since huge archives of remote sensing imagery are openly available, spatial ontologies for land classification need to consider the temporal aspects of such data. We argue that introducing the concept of ‘events’ and the using event calculus can improve our ability to extract information from large land remote sensing images.
