This paper reported on the first detailed analysis of the time over which contributors participate to the OSM project. An extensive analysis of OSM data history showed that the rate at which users stop contributing varies over time, defining six different phases in the life cycle of contributors. These phases were identified using the pivotal points found on the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the time the contributors spent in the project. We found that contributions are more frequent, larger, and more evenly distributed for participants that spent more than 6 years in the project.
