Underreporting is a persistent limitation of research on environmental risk factors associated with dog cancer, impeding potential comparative investigations with human cancer. In this study, we demonstrate that spatial variation in underreporting challenges the use of statistical models for fitting dog cancer incidences. To improve the statistical performance, we propose a regional modeling approach accounting for different reporting practices across the study area.
