The paper reports on a study comparing the scalability of online PPGIS methods with face-to-face participatory meetings in urban land use planning. The results show that online PPGIS methods scale out to involve more participants and up to include participants from wider geographical regions than face-to-face meetings. The scalability effect is uneven across age groups providing a rational for a mixed-mode approach to public participation in land use planning.
