Introduction

Generative AI has the potential to enhance children's learning and creativity.  It also poses new risks and challenges to the safety and privacy of young people. By adopting a child-centric approach to AI development in use and implementing robust privacy and safety measures, we can empower the next generation to harness the power of this innovative technology while mitigating its potential harms. This panel aims to examine multilateral solutions to address the unique challenges youth will face in the AI era and the paths industry and government can take to prioritize children's privacy and safety while capturing the immense benefits of AI.

Key questions and objectives

  • What are the potential risks and harms to children posed by generative AI, and how do these risks differ from traditional online safety concerns?
  • What role do ethical guidelines and standards in addition to regulatory frameworks play in promoting responsible AI development, especially in the context of protecting children’s rights?
  • How can we raise awareness and educate children about the risks of generative AI technologies?
  • What are the best practices in this domain?
