María Rita Palattella

Senior R&T Associate
Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST)

Dr. Maria Rita Palattella (S’04, M’07, PhD’11) is a Senior R&T Associate at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) in the Remote Sensing and Eco-Hydrological Modelling Group, of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department. She is leading the work on the design of innovative communication systems and network architectures for different Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, and natural disaster management.

Prior to that, she has been a Research Associate at the Interdisciplinary centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg. She contributed to the design of MAC protocols and energy-efficient scheduling algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks. She was involved in several EU FP7 and H2020 projects, including OUTSMART, IoT6, F-Interop which focused on: the development of smart IoT applications, online testing tools for IoT technologies, interoperable IoT platforms, and the exploitation of the potential of IPv6 and related standards (IEEE802.15.4e, IETF RPL, etc.). Her interest also covers Smart Cities through the investigation of applicability of IoT solutions in urban scenarios, to enable smart mobility, and management of heterogeneous systems and resources in VANETs, using the Software Defined Networking (SDN) approach.

In the context of the emerging 5G heterogeneous networks, and with respect to the Smart Space concept, she is investigating means of efficiently intertwining IoT/M2M applications and satellite technologies, in collaboration with SES and ESA, in the framework of the M2MSAT project.

Dr. Palattella sits on the Editorial Board of the Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies (ETT), and the EAI Transactions on IoT. She is a member of IEEE, and also secretary of the IEEE 5G Mobile Wireless Internet Technical Subcommittee. She is an active member of the IETF 6TiSCH WG, and she was selected as 6TiSCH expert for three ETSI 6TiSCH Plugtests. She has served as TPC member for several IoT-related conferences, and as reviewer for International conferences and journals. She has (co)-authored several papers published in well known, high-impact journals and International conferences.
