IPv6 and its Role in IoT, 11.30 - 12.10

According to various studies, such as the Ericsson Mobility Report, a significant part of the anticipated growth in connected devices will no longer be driven by traditional communication devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, but rather by IoT devices. The number of these devices is expected to triple by 2021, while the number of traditional devices is set to stay more or less stagnant.

Although this huge number of network participants will open up many new opportunities in the field of digitisation, it will also pose considerable challenges for the network infrastructure. Due to the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, the rollout of IPv6 is a key step forward in countering the rapid growth in the IoT space.
