Iñigo Urkullu Renteria is Lehendakari of the Basque Government in this XI Legislature from November 26, 2016, the day on which he was sworn in under the Tree of Gernika. Repeats as Lehendakari after taking office for the first time on December 15, 2012. Iñigo Urkullu has been committed to the Policy since he was young. Between 2007 and 2012 he was president of Euzkadi Buru Batzar of EAJ-PNV. Previously he chaired the Territorial Executive of Bizkaia (BBB) for eight years.
In his four legislatures as parliamentarian for Bizkaia in the Basque Parliament (1994-2007), he was a member of various commissions, such as the Education and Culture Commission, the Special Commission on Self-Government, or the Legislative Urgency Commission, Regulation and Government, among others, and was president for three terms of the Human Rights Commission (1998-2008). He was also a member of the Advisory Council of Euskera (1994-2001) and previously of the Social Council of the EHU-UPV (1986-1989).
The lehendakari Urkullu is a Teacher. He studied teaching with a specialization in Basque Philology, and taught at Asti-Leku Ikastola in Portugalete and at the Félix Serrano Public School in Bilbao, after obtaining his place in public education. Born in Alonsotegi (Bizkaia) in 1961, he is married and has two children and a daughter.
