Dimitris Koureas

Managing Director of Digital Science Strategy & Data Innovation
Naturalis Biodiversity Center
Participates in 1 Session

As an active data scientist in the field of biodiversity, Dimitris Koureas understands the urgent need to change our data practices to make use of their inherent potential. About 80% of the time of data scientists in science and industry is wasted for data wrangling, many data driven projects fail and many scientists and start-ups are excluded from data intensive work due to the high inefficiencies and lack of data sharing. Dimitris Koureas is now Director of a collaboration of more than 140 major European institutions and natural museums (DiSSCo) to improve interoperability substantially with the intention to finally better preserve biodiversity. He is also actively engaged in the global Research Data Alliance to push interoperability across disciplines and sectors at a global level.

In the field of data driven biodiversity Dimitris can be seen as one of the most distinguished experts in Europe helping to re-shape the field and to introduce best practices and standards in order to make optimal use of the available data.
