IoT Adoption Barriers - which, why and how? (U4IoT Project)

Theme:
Emerging IoT Research and Development
What:
Workshop
When:
4:45 PM, Tuesday 5 Jun 2018 (1 hour 45 minutes)
How:

Introduction. This workshop will be convened as a part of User Engagement for Large Scale Pilots in the Internet of Things (U4IoT – www.u4iot.eu) a Horizon 2020 project. U4IoT aims to provide the Large-Scale Pilots (LSPs) within the Internet of Things (IoT) Programme with end-user engagement support. The five domains that the LSPs will tackle are smart cities, smart agriculture, wearable technologies, smart home care and autonomous driving vehicles. In the U4IoT project, by means of reviewing relevant literature as well as interviewing experts in each domain, we have identified some issues related to the IoT implementation in three main themes, namely ethical, societal and ecological.

Aim. The aim of this workshop is to bring together participants from the five LSPs as well as other IoT experts, in order to discuss, validate and extend identified issues; and at the same time to discover other issues related to IoT implementations that we are not yet aware of. Moreover, the main barriers and/or enablers for end-users to adopt and use those IoT solutions in each of the five domains will be discussed in greater detail.

Approach. In this workshop, we will follow the World Café methodology, which is an interactive knowledge sharing approach across mixed groups that enables participants to have creative conversations around different tables. The session begins by introducing IoT adoption barriers, followed by three rounds of twenty-minute discussions (60 minutes in total) around three tables (i.e., ethical, societal and ecological issues). Adoption barriers will also be discussed at each table. The workshop ends by sharing insights of the different tables with the rest of the group and reflecting on the results from all tables.

Target audience and outcome. The workshop is open to everyone interested in the field and its participants (including LSPs’ representatives and other IoT experts) will gain an in-depth knowledge of the issues related to the IoT implementation in each domain and will learn how to tackle IoT adoption barriers from an end-user perspective.
